Tasting Apothic Crush

On Thursday, I was invited over for a movie night by the girls I roomed with in Austria, as we have remained very close friends after that trip. They were having a big group over to drink and watch Army of Darkness (spoiler alert: I didn't pay a lick of attention to the movie). When I arrived, there were a whole bunch of Mike's Hards and quite a bit of tequila, but what interested me was a large bottle of red wine sitting on the bar. This was the perfect chance to add to my tastings!

The wine was a 2016 Apothic Crush red blend from California. Miranda, one of my Austria roomies and the one who purchased the alcohol, said it was about $10. It had a strong sweet/spicy smell to it that seemed to me like cinnamon. When I tasted it, it was fairly tannic and dry, and had floral hints to it that I really don't know how to place (I'm not sure what certain flowers smell like). I know I've said this before but I really don't like red wines, as I can never get past the alcohol taste until about 5 swallows in. It was around that time when I could actually identify cranberries (with that rubber-band aftertaste), apples, and an herb like cilantro or something. Once I got a few descriptors in, I decided to enlist some friends to tell me what THEY tasted, as they were more into red wines. I asked them to just spout off what they immediately thought of as they tasted it.

Miranda: tannic, dry, raspberries, pepper, apples, red fruit, medium body.
Random Guy that I Forgot to Ask Name: dry, smooth, plums, grapes, raspberries, body.

I don't think I've ever had actual raspberries, so judging by these reports, I probably would have tasted it had I known. The only thing in common my description had was apples, and for both of us it fell into the "sweet red" category rather than "sour green" (which is my favorite). Again, I feel as if my bias against reds colored my experience here and made it harder for me to taste the flavors. BUT! I had fun and don't think I did too terribly.

This is the only other picture I have from that night because we all got distracted talking about The Room and drinking yummy things.
